The Urge To Eat Less

On this date in 1947, then President Harry S. Truman gave the first ever televised White House address. The speech was about food, specifically, the lack of it soon to be felt by allies across the pond. Truman asked Americans to eat voluntarily less, providing a few rules to eat by.

One – no meat on Tuesdays

Two – no eggs on Thursdays

Three – save a slice of bread everyday

Four – bread and butter will be served in public eating places only on request
