Emancipation Day

Because Emancipation Day falls on a Saturday this year, it will be celebrated the day before, thereby giving taxpayers until Monday the 18th to file their taxes. Emancipation Day commemorates President Lincoln’s signing of an 1862 law freeing slaves in the District of Columbia.

Slaves were the most valuable asset at the time, worth $3.5 billion in 1860 dollars.
