Patty Smith Hill And Fado

Patty Smith Hill was born on this date in 1868. Patty and her sister, Mildred J. Hill wrote the song “Good Morning To All.” The melody for “Happy Birthday To You” comes from that song.

Fado means “fate” or “destiny” in Portuguese, and is Portugal’s national song style. Dating back to the 1820s, it was and is considered to be the  music of a port,  where mixtures occur, with sailors bringing influences from Brazil, the Arab world and even China. Portuguese speakers claim the word, “saudade,” which contains the essence of the music is translatable to longing, yearning, melancholy or nostalgia.

Fado is Portugal’s national song style, and is experiencing an influx of new voices carrying the torch once held by Amalia Rodrigues, who is considered the queen of that genre.
